Essential Oil Uses

Essential Oils For Massage, Body Care, Hair, Skin and Nail Care:  Add 10-20 drops of essential oils to your choice of a carrier oil or bath and body products.  Use a lesser amount for sensitive skin, children and the elderly.  Mix well.
Essential Oils Bath:  Add 10-20 drops of essential oils to your choice of a carrier oil and add to the bath. 
Essential Oils Warmers:  Add a few drops in a diffuser, lamp ring or oil warmer.  Do not leave unattended.
Essential Oils Inhalation:  Add 2 drops of essential oils to a tissue or aromatherapy pendant, hold to your nose and inhale.  Add drops of essential oils to streaming water, allow the vapor to surround the face, cover eye area.
Essential Oils Room Spray: 
Add 10 drops of essential oils per ounce of water in spray mist bottle. 
Essential Oils Perfume Oil and Anointing Oils:  Add 10 drops of essential oils to a carrier oil, shake well and apply to pulse points wrists and neck area.  Essential oils have been used  soothing the mind, body and spirit for centuries.

 

Notes about Essential Oils

Angelica Seed Essential Oils

Scent: Angelica seed oil is slightly sweeter than from the root and less musky.  A unique peppery but fresh scent. the yield from the seed is very low which makes Angelica Seed a pricy oil. Angelica Seed: Protection, creativity, visionary work enhanced energy Precautions: Do NOT use during pregnancy. Not for use by individuals that are diabetic or have epilepsy. Angelica can be photosensitive. Do not use within a minimum of at least 12 hours prior to sun exposure.
Possible Uses: Angelica may be beneficial for the common cold, flu, cough, fevers, bronchial conditions. menstrual cramps, arthritis, rheumatism, migraine, dry, itchy  or irritated skin and muscle aches. Angelica oil may be particularly good for treating dull, lifeless skin, dermatitis and psoriasis. Use in massage blends or baths for reducing nervous tension, anxiety and stress. Angelica is used as a stop smoking aid, calming the jitters, restoring energy levels, which may be low as a result of smoking.  Angelica was popular among the Native Americans to relive respiratory congestion and as a boost for recovering from illness.  In Chinese medicine it is used fro menstrual irregularities and discomfort. It is also used as a stop smoking aid, calming the jitters and restoring energy levels which may be low as a result of smoking.  Considered to be an aphrodisiac (love potion).

Bergamot Essential Oils

Fresh citrus and light floral. Delicate and sweet, similar to Neroli. Bergamot: Optimism, emotional strength, mood lifting,  nurturing, increased self esteem and healing associated with loss of a loved one or relationship.  Precautions: Do NOT use during pregnancy unless approved by a qualified physician. Bergamot is highly photosensitive. Do not use within a minimum of at least 12 hours prior to sun exposure.
Possible Uses: Bergamot may be beneficial for reducing tension, anxiety and a mood lifter used in  massage, baths and body care products.  Due to the antiseptic qualities Bergamot may be beneficial for acne, oily and all skin types.  Bergamot is a wonderful choice for those feeling melancholy or in need of emotional lift and comfort.

Basil Essential Oils

Light refreshing with a faint balsamic woody bottom note. Basil: Clairvoyance, concentration, purification,  prosperity in business, enhanced romance, love, protection and blessing of home. Precautions: Do NOT use during pregnancy. Not for use by individuals with a seizure disorder. Use sparingly on the skin because it can cause irritation.
Possible Uses Basil may be beneficial for clearing the sinuses, stimulating circulation, fatigue, depression, increases alertness, concentration, relieves headaches, head congestion, migraines, muscular aches and pains, regulating the menstrual cycle, reduce menstrual cramps, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties and useful as an insect repellent.  In Hindu religion Basil represents eternal life, purification and protection. In Italy it is associated with love.  In folklore it is an important ingredient for a witches brew ingested prior to flight for aiding in the balance of energy.

Cedarwood Essential Oils

Rich, earthy, balsamic resembling wood  shavings. Grounding, earthy and uplifting. Cedarwood: Rebirth, gratitude, earth wisdom, living in harmony and honoring the gifts of nature. Precautions: Do NOT use during pregnancy. May irritate sensitive skin.
Possible Uses: Cedarwood may be beneficial for reducing tension and anxiety, loosening and soothing sore muscles, acne, eczema, arthritis, circulation, congestion, encouraging peace, tranquility, reducing anger, mellowing aggressive behavior.  It's healing qualities are widely used for general skin and hair care. The scent of Cedarwood is also used to scent closets and drawers.

Chamomile Essential Oils

A relaxing aroma sometimes described as like apples and hey. Earthy and slightly herbal scent.  Chamomile: Calming, promotes a sense of inner peace. Associated with purification, tranquility, wisdom, grace and fortitude. Precautions: Avoid in early pregnancy. Avoid use if you are allergic to the ragweed family.
Chamomile promotes inner peace, relaxation and may be beneficial for soothing tired muscles, joints and relief of premenstrual discomfort. Chamomile contains varying amounts of a substance named Azulene which is used in face and body creams, soothing sunburns,  burn ointments, and bath salts. Azulene offers excellent anti-inflammatory properties, detoxifies and is very calming and soothing to the skin. Chamomile (Moroc) usually contain a higher amount of Azulene than Chamomile Roman. Lavender is one of the most widely used oils and may be beneficial for rheumatism, arthritis, headaches, aging, oily, dry and sensitive skin. Lavender promotes relaxation, tranquility and is associated with peace, love and beauty.

Clary Sage Essential Oils

Herbal, cleansing, uplifting, musky and slightly spicy Clary Sage: Mystery, beauty, prosperity in business and love, blessing of the home, positive change and balance of energy.  Precautions: Do NOT use during pregnancy. Use with caution as Clary Sage can  interfere with some antipsychotic pharmaceutical drugs and increase the effects of drinking alcohol.
Possible Uses: Clary Sage may be beneficial for settling nerves due to daily stress, depression, sore muscles, insomnia and may lower blood pressure. Clary Sage contains an estrogen like component, known as a women's herb it is useful for menstrual  and premenstrual discomfort, hot flashes, headaches and helps balance hormones. Clary sage offers anti-inflammatory, astringent, healing and regenerative qualities and is useful for aging and mature skin, blemishes and hair care.   Clary Sage is popular in massage soothing for the skin, spirit and body.

Eucalyptus Essential Oils

A camphor scent that is fresh and purifying Eucalyptus: Dreamtime, purification, perseverance, manifestation of positive energy, completing projects, patience, self empowerment and spiritual growth. Precautions: Do NOT use during pregnancy. Eucalyptus is a very strong oil and can irritate skin,  Dilute well n a carrier oil before using on skin.
Possible Uses: The wonderful properties of Eucalyptus combat the common cold and the flu. It is invigorating and penetrating making  it beneficial for rheumatism, sore throats, soothing sore muscles and joints. It may be beneficial for respiratory infections, circulatory systems and helps to strengthen the immune system. It offers antiseptic and regenerative properties that are beneficial for skin blemishes, skin lesions, acne burns and athlete's foot Used as an ingredient in massage and the bath, the warming effect of eucalyptus is therapeutic for muscular pain and stiffness. Eucalyptus oil  used as a natural insect repellent and may also mental clarity and alertness.

Fir needle Essential Oils

Fresh, earthy, similar to the scent of the mountain woods.  Fir is an evergreen and one of the most popular choices for a Christmas tree. Fir needle: Ancient wisdom, honoring mother earth, rebirth, purity, tenderness, mental clarity, improved communication.  Precautions: Fir needle is photosensitive. Do not use within a minimum of at least 12 hours prior to sun exposure.
Possible Uses: Fir Needle is mood lifting and may be beneficial for relieving arthritis, bronchitis, colds, coughs, muscle aches, and may act as a mild pain reliever. Fir Needle may open the sinus and breathing passages, improve mental clarity and encourage communication. The American Indians found the Fir tree to be very beneficial utilized it for tea, healing wounds, ceremonies and sweat baths.

Eucalyptus Essential Oils

Frankincense comes from the resin of the frankincense tree has a fresh, woody, slightly spicy and fruity fragrance.  Frankincense: Meditation, spiritual attunement, psychic visions, prosperity, removing negative energy, purification of sacred space, spiritual tools and objects and a love potion. Precautions: Use well diluted and avoid eye area.
Possible Uses:  Frankincense is a wonderful oil for aging skin, sooths inflammation, rejuvenates and tones and may encourage a more youthful complexion. Frankincense may be beneficial for anxiety, asthma, bronchitis, coughing, scars, stress, and stretch marks. It is primarily used as incense, perfumes and for spiritual enhancement.  Frankincense is lavishly used in religious ceremonies, popular among the Egyptians. According to the Gospel of Matthew, frankincense, along with myrrh and gold, was one of the three gifts from the Magi to Jesus.  Frankincense helps center the mind,  calm the spirit and is a mild sedative.

Geranium Essential Oils

Geranium is sweet, and slightly earthly, similar in character to Rose. Geranium: Prosperity, earth blessings, clearing of uninvited spirits,  heightened senses and wisdom Precautions: Do NOT use during pregnancy unless approved by a qualified physician. It can balance the hormonal system. Can cause sensitivity in some people use well diluted. 
Possible Uses: Geranium oil is soothing and calming often used in treating anxiety, depression, emotional excitability, jumpiness,  restlessness, premenstrual tension,  discomfort associated with menopause, poor circulation and as a natural insect repellant. The anti-inflammatory properties of geranium oil make it useful for many skin conditions, eczema, acne, dermatitis, both dry and oily skin conditions.  The ancients were known to plant geraniums around the house to help keep evil sprits at bay.

Grapefruit Essential Oils

Fresh, slightly bitter citrus scent that is very characteristic of the fruit. Grapefruit: Optimism, purity, renewal, increased mental powers and heightened awareness. Precautions: Grapefruit is photosensitive. Do not use within a minimum of at least 12 hours prior to sun exposure. Avoid eye area.
Possible Uses: Easing muscle fatigue and stiffness, oily and acne prone skin spiritual up-lifter, and to ease muscle fatigue and stiffness. It is also a purifier of congested, oily and acne prone skin. Grapefruit oil is also sometimes added to creams and lotions as a natural toner.

Grapefruit Essential Oils

Sweet, floral with earthly green notes.  Lavender:  Peace, tranquility, purity, love, gentleness, beauty and celebrating Midsummer. Calming, balancing, and stimulating to the body and spirit. Precautions: Avoid high doses during pregnancy because it is a possible uterine stimulant
Possible Uses: Antibacterial properties that may be beneficial for soothing and healing delicate and sensitive skin.  It is commonly used in herbal baths, teas, sachets are for general healing and well being.  May be beneficial for  reducing symptoms of PMS, acne, anxiety, bruises, burns, headache, oily skin, rheumatism, scars, sores, stress, stretch marks,  mild cases of vertigo, reducing anxiety, stress and mild cases of depression. It has been used for thousands of years for its calming, peaceful, and sedating effects.  Lavender is mentioned in the Bible, by the name spikenard.   In the apocryphal book of the Bible Judith anointed herself with perfumes including lavender. 

Lime Essential Oils

Lime has a crisp, sweet, fresh smell characteristic of citrus products. Lime:  Courage, wisdom, purification, blessings, tranquility and celestial wisdom.   Precautions: Do NOT use during pregnancy. Do not use within a minimum of at least 4 hours prior to sun exposure.
Possible Uses:  It can act as an astringent on skin, most beneficial for oily skin

Jasmine Essential Oils

A beautiful floral smell that is both sweet and lingering, admired and found to be alluring for both men and women. Jasmine:  Angelic protection, promotes love of others and self, peace, happiness, aphrodisiac and love potion. Precautions: Do NOT use during pregnancy unless approved by a qualified physician. Jasmine can produce an allergic reaction in some individuals.
Possible Uses: Jasmine is soothing and balancing beneficial to all  skin types. Gentle for the treatment of irritated and inflamed skin.  Jasmine offers anti-inflammatory properties used in baths, sensual massage, skin care and diffusers. Jasmine is valued as a mild antidepressant useful in the treatment of emotional pain and stress-related conditions. It induces a feeling of calmness, relaxation and is an aphrodisiac and love potion. It takes several thousand Jasmine blossoms to produce 1 gram of oil.  Jasmine is most often found diluted in a carrier oil to make is affordable. Jasmine is a very rich and deep scent. High quality Jasmine a 3% dilution is very aromatic and therapeutic. 

Lemon Essential Oils

The aroma is similar to a fresh lemon rind, deeper and more concentrated. Lemon: Cleansing, uplifting, energizing, love, friendship and vitality. It's therapeutic use dates back to the Greeks and Romans. Precautions: Not for use during pregnancy unless approved by a qualified physician. May cause irritation for those with sensitive skin. Lemon is photosensitive. Do not use within a minimum of at least 12 hours prior to sun exposure.
Possible Uses: Lemon is highly valued for its anti-bacterial properties.  Cleansing for skin and hair, soothing for minor skin irritations, cuts and boils, may be beneficial for circulation and help to boost the immune system. This oil is uplifting, energizing and promotes optimism. Lemon has a light, fresh citrus scent which is a great addition to household cleaners.

Lemongrass Essential Oils

Fresh earthy citrus scent. Lemongrass: Prosperity in love and friendship, good fortune, illumination and communication with the spirit world.    Precautions: Avoid use for individuals with glaucoma. Use caution with skin that is sensitive or damaged.  Keep away from eyes. Possible skin irritant
Possible Uses:  Lemongrass has very soothing effect on the emotions. Helps boost the immune system, may improve circulation, soothing for tired aching muscles.

Mandarin Essential Oils

Sweet, floral citrus scent  Mandarin: Enlightenment, removing inhibitions, happiness, setting goals and financial stability. Precautions: Mandarin is highly photosensitive. Do not use within a minimum of at least 12 hours prior to sun exposure.
Possible Uses: Mandarin essential oil used in soaps, cosmetics, perfumes, colognes and in the flavoring industry. Mandarin is said to reduce cellulite, tone oily skin ,acts as an antiseptic, reduce. nervous tension and irritability. Makes a nice air freshener, promotes calmness and a sense of well-being.  Mandarin has also been used for hyperactive kids during periods of insomnia (1% dilution rate). Always receive approval from a qualified physician prior to using essential oils with children. It's very uplifting and revitalizing, helps to ease anxiety.

Marjoram, Sweet Essential Oils

A fresh, brisk, warming and spicy scent.

 
Sweet Marjoram: Love; protection against negative energy, wealth, happiness and purification.  Precautions: Do NOT use during pregnancy.
Possible Uses: It is also useful for treating tired aching muscles. Marjoram in the bath or diffuser will encourage sleep and relaxation. Marjoram as a massage or in the bath may relieve muscle pain, cramps, headaches, migraines and stiffness. Massaging the abdomen may relief menstrual cramping. Popular among the ancient Greeks the name itself originates from a Greek word meaning “Joy of the Mountains”.  Marjoram may be beneficial for reducing anxiety, fatigue, congestion, aches and pains which makes it wonderful for a sport massage.

Neroli Essential Oils

A lovely floral citrus scent distilled from the blossoms of either the sweet or the bitter orange tree.  A warm and sensuous floral scent. Neroli: Passion, overcoming fears, increasing self confidence, balancing of feminine and masculine energy (yin/yang) spiritual growth. Aphrodisiac and love potion. Precautions: As with all essential oils avoid eye area.
Possible Uses: Neroli is very calming and may be beneficial for reducing anxiety,  menopause, depression, dry, sensitive, mature skin, improving circulation, encouraging the growth of new skin cells (regenerative), balancing oiliness in the skin, minimizes pores size, acne and blemishes, prevention of scarring, reducing the appearance of  broken capillaries and varicose veins. Neroli helps o create healthier and beautified skin.  It instills tranquility, calmness, an aphrodisiac and a love potion. Neroli is a beautiful oil but very expensive, as an alternative Petitgrain has similar properties and is more affordable.  Neroli is highly valued by the people of Venice where it's use originated.

Orange, Sweet Essential Oils

Sweet orange oil smells like a freshly peeled orange. Orange is an uplifting and refreshing. Sweet Orange: Optimism, overcoming obstacles, reaching goals, creativity and new beginnings. Precautions: Orange is highly photosensitive. Do not use within a minimum of at least 12 hours prior to sun exposure.
Possible Uses: It has also been applied to combat Colds, constipation, dull skin, flatulence, the flu, gums, slow digestion, and stress. It's also relaxing, uplifting and refreshing. It's often used as an air freshener to combat odors and freshen your rooms. It's good for the digestive and immune systems.

Peppermint Essential Oils

Peppermint is known for both its warming and cooling properties, very fresh, clean and cool. Peppermint: Dreamtime, increased mental power; healing, purification and protection during travel. Precautions: Avoid use during pregnancy.  Use well diluted, can be irritating to those with sensitive skins.
Possible Uses: Peppermint helps with mental fatigue and nervous stress and headaches. The anti-inflammatory properties of peppermint may benefit aching muscles, improve circulation and is a wonderful in massage and the bath.. Peppermint is a strong oil, For the bath use as little as 3 drops or dilute in a carrier oil . It is beneficial for skin care, particularly oily skin. Used in steam inhalation it may add relieve colds and bronchial conditions. Peppermint is an aphrodisiac and a love potion.  Peppermint oil refreshes and rejuvenates the mind and body and is a mood lifter.  Improves focus and clarity of thought and offers protection during travel an in the home.

Petitgrain Essential Oils

Similar to orange blossoms with a bitter, woody and herbaceous undertone. The properties found in Petitgrain are similar to Neroli. Petitgrain: Beauty, grace, prosperity in business,   positive change and balance of energy. Precautions: None Known.
Possible Uses: Petitgrain is uplifting and may be beneficial for reducing frustration, irritability, anger and stress. Other benefits may include general skin care, most beneficial for acne and oily skin.

Rose Absolute Essential Oils

A beautifully complex, sweet and floral scent Rose: Love, peace and beauty. Precautions: Do NOT use during pregnancy and for individuals with epilepsy
Possible Uses: An exotic and very expensive aphrodisiac and highly valued as a rich emollient beneficial for all skin types including those with sensitive skin. Appreciated and admired by the ancients as it is today. One of the most beautiful and soothing oils for skin care. Rose has a long history of being associated with love, romance, passion and peace.

Rosemary Essential Oils

Rosemary is evergreen, with a soft forest fresh scent.  According to legend, the scent of Rosemary was used to awaken Sleeping Beauty. 

 

 

Rosemary: Protection, eternity, faithfulness, peace, happiness, clarity, remembrance healing, opening the energy channels and spiritual cleansing.

Rosemary has been associated with weddings as a symbol of faithfulness, placed on gravesites as a symbol of love,  remembrance and healing from loss. 

Precautions: DO Not use for individuals with people with epileptic seizures (epilepsy) or high blood pressure. Not for use during pregnancy as it can stimulate blood flow in the pelvic area and uterus. Rosemary may interfere with  homeopathic remedies and prescriptions. If using medications consult with your physician prior to use. Use well diluted and keep put of reach of children.
Possible Uses: Rosemary may be beneficial for overcoming mental fatigue, mental clarity, alertness, concentration, circulation, acne, hair care, sore muscles and joints, rheumatism, headaches, symptoms of cold and flu, stress, restful sleep and uplifting the spirits. Uses include bath and  massage for stress relief and soothing sore muscles. Latin name 'rosmarinus' translates into 'sea-dew' which comes from its preference to grow close to the sea.  Later in history it became known as rosemary in honor of the Virgin Mary. According to legend Mary sheltered the baby Jesus under a rosemary bush for protection. Rosemary became known as the "herb of remembrance because it was thought to aid in keeping one's memory sharp and placed on gravesites as a symbol of love, remembrance and healing from loss.  In ancient Greece  scholars wore garlands of rosemary as a mental stimulant during exams.

Rosewood Essential Oils

Rosewood is more earthy and slightly musky compared to traditional rose, A scent that can be carried by both men and women in blends and bath products. Rosewood: Increasing mental focus, grounding, balance of emotions, health and celebrating the moon phases.  Precautions: Not for use during pregnancy unless approved by a qualified physician..
Possible Uses: Rosewood has antibacterial, and rejuvenating properties and  may be beneficial for stress-related conditions, skin care, acne, colds, dry skin, dull skin, fever, flu, headache, oily skin, scars, sensitive skin and stretch marks. Rosewood may also help to reduce fatigue for sore and tired muscles.  Rosewood also known as Bois de Rose (Aniba rosaeodora) is an evergreen tree used by the Amazonian Indians for centuries for its ability to soothe and rejuvenate the skin. 

Sandalwood Essential Oils

Rich, sensual, woodsy and exotic. Sandalwood: Sensuality, spiritual attunement, enlightenment and enhanced psychic energy.  Aphrodisiac and love potion Precautions: None known.
Possible Uses: Sandalwood may be beneficial for mild  bronchial conditions, chapped, dry, sensitive skin, scars, depression and stress.   It has an astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, most beneficial for oily skin and irritated skin. Sandalwood is believed to create an exotic.

Tangerine Essential Oils

A sweet, radiant and sassy scent that is uplifting and fresh. Very similar to Mandarin but slightly more brisk. Tangerine:  Joy, playfulness, rejuvenation, clearing of  energy channels, rejuvenating and healing. Precautions: Mandarin is highly photosensitiveDo not use within a minimum of at least 12 hours prior to sun exposure.
Possible Uses: It's beneficial stimulate circulation. refreshing and rejuvenating . Tangerine is used in perfumes, soaps for it's pleasant and cheerful aroma. It is used as a mild stimulant as well as a sedative. Stress relieving, uplifting and playful. Tangerine helps to bring clarity and clearing of energy channels.

Vetiver Essential Oils

An earthy, woody scent with a sweet note that is both warm and masculine. Vetiver: Tranquility, warmth, comfort, grounding, emotional stability and focus with intent. Precautions: None Known.
Possible Uses: Vetiver may be beneficial for rheumatism, insomnia, nervousness, mild muscle relaxant, soothing muscular aches and pains, skin care (most beneficial for oily skin) and antiseptic properties.  Vetiver is known as the “oil of tranquility” and is calming to the emotions in stressful situations or time of emotional distress.

Tea Tree Essential Oils

A fresh, slightly pungent, medicinal. mint with a touch of spice. Tea Tree: Cleansing, purification and youth. Precautions: Tea Tree can be irritating to those with sensitive skin.
Possible Uses: Tea Tree is known to stimulate the body's immune system. The antiviral and bactericidal properties may be beneficial for relieving  colds, respiratory infections, cold sores, healing wounds, acne, clearing acne and for general skin and hair care. 

Thyme Essential Oils

Fresh, herbaceous, medicinal scent, brisk and warming. Thyme: Purification, clairvoyance,  courage, imagination, happiness, affection and the fairy realm.

 

Precautions: FOR EXTERNAL USE ONLY. Not for use during pregnancy or breast feeding. NOT to be used by individuals with high blood pressure, ulcers or thyroid conditions. Use in small amounts and well diluted, can irritate mucus membranes and skin. Do not use on children.
Possible Uses: Thyme oil may benefit nervous complaints, respiratory problems and poor circulation. Thyme has antiseptic qualities is stimulating, uplifting and reviving. As a herbal remedy, thyme dates back to early BC as the ancient civilizations used it as an antiseptic and for aiding in the relief of  bronchial ailments. Thyme comes the Greek word thumus meaning “courage”.  Roman soldiers associated thyme for courage, often bathing in waters scented with thyme.  Among the Greeks, Thyme symbolized grace and elegance.  An old tradition says that thyme was one of the herbs that formed the bed for the Baby Jesus.  In Ancient Folk magic it was believed that fairies preferred the softness of thyme for their bedding.  Thyme was burned as incense to purify temples. During the Middle Ages Thyme was given to jousting Knights for courage in battle. Today it is still widely used as a natural incense for cleansing sacred spaces and bringing good health.
Precautions:
  Thyme is NOT for use by those with high blood pressure, ulcers or thyroid conditions.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oils

Ylang Ylang essential oil is sweet, exotic, floral, similar to Jasmine. A sensual scent that is favorable to both men and women. Ylang Ylang: Spiritual attunement, introspection, self empowerment, actualizing ones dreams and wishes, love and angelic protection. Precautions: Ylang Ylang can cause sensitivity on some people, do not in excess as it may lead to headaches and nausea.
Possible Uses: It may be beneficial as a mild anti-depressant,  reducing blood pressure, anxiety.  Beneficial for all skin types, including combination skin balances oil production for the hair and skin. Ylang Ylang may help to balance hormones, relieve premenstrual, menopausal symptoms.  An aphrodisiac, love potion and mild sedative.
